महाभारत तो आप लोगों ने पढ़ा ही होगा। अगर पढ़ा नहीं होगा तो दूरदर्शन पर जरूर देखा होगा। और, जब देखा होगा तो हस्तिनापुर से तो भी परीचित होंगे। जी हाँ, वही हस्तिनापुर जिसके लिए भारतीय इतिहास का सबसे बड़ा युद्ध हुआ था। और, होता भी क्यों न, तत्कालीन समय में भारत का सबसे समृद्ध नगर जो था।

You must have read the Mahabharata. If not read, you must have seen on TV. And, when you saw it, you would be familiar with Hastinapur. Yes, the same Hastinapur for which the biggest war in Indian history was fought. And, why doesn't this happen, this was the India's most prosperous city at that time.
दरसल, हस्तिनापुर कुरू क्षेत्र की राजधानी थी। वही कुरूक्षेत्र जिसके मैदान में महाभारत का युद्ध लड़ा गया था। तब कुरूक्षेत्र बहुत विशाल राज्य हुआ करता था। इसका नाम कुरू वंश के नाम पर पड़ा था जो भरत वंश और पुरू वंश के मेल से बना था।

Actually, Hastinapur was the capital of Kuru region. The same Kurukshetra in which the Mahabharata war was fought. Kurukshetra used to be a huge state then. It was named after the Kuru dynasty which was made up of a combination of the Bharata dynasty and the Puru dynasty.
महाभारत काल से बहुत पहले हाथियों की अधीकता के कारण हस्तिना पुर का नाम गजपुर था, किंतु कालांतर में पुरूवंशीय राजा वृहत्क्षत्र के पुत्र हस्तिन ने इसका विकास खिया और इसका नाम हस्तिनापुर रखा। एक कथा के अनुसार राजा वृषभ देव ने अपने संबंधी कुरू को एक राज्य उपहार में दिया था। अतः उसका नाम कुरूक्षेत्र पड़ा। और हस्तिनापुर उसकी राजधानी बनी।

Long before the Mahabharata period, Hastinapur was named Gajpur due to the overlordship of elephants, but later Hastin, the son of the King Vrhatakshatra of Puru dynasty, developed it and named it Hastinapur. According to a legend, King Vrishabha Dev gifted a kingdom to his relative Kuru. Hence, the name of the kingdom became Kurukshetra. And Hastinapur became its capital.
अब प्रश्न यह उठता है कि क्या हस्तिनापुर अब भी है? और, अगर है तो कहाँ?
वर्तमान समय में हस्तिनापुर उत्तर-प्रदेश के मेरठ जिला मुख्यालय से 37 किलोमीटर और दिल्ली से लगभग 100 किलोमीटर दूर है। इसकी पुनर्स्थापना 1949 ई. में देश के पहले प्रधानमंत्री पं. जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने की थी। अब यह एक छोटी सी बस्ती है जिसकी आबादी लगभग 35000 है।
दिल्ली के पुराने किले कां संबंध भी महाभारत काल से है। संभवतः यह इंद्रप्रस्थ नगर का किला था जिसे युधिष्ठिर ने बनवाया था।

Now the question arises whether Hastinapur is still there? And if so where? At present, Hastinapur is at 37 km from Meerut district headquarters of Uttar Pradesh and about 100 km from Delhi. It was restored by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the country (India) in 1949 AD. It is now a small town with a population of about 35000. The old fort of Delhi is also related to the Mahabharata period. Probably it was the fort of Indraprastha Nagar which was built by Yudhishthira.
